I'm Worried about Security & Privacy - Should I Join The Facebook Group?

For the security conscious, the only risks associated with Facebook use are the same as any public-facing environment: beware of unsolicited messages, especially those claiming your account violates Facebook's standards. Those are fake, and there sure are a lot of them. Facebook doesn't notify members of violations through messages or emails; it uses notifications, and remember to verify the sender before downloading anything.

As with all public forums, the quality of the experience and the environment's safety depends on how the forum is moderated. We're investing in moderating this group to provide a positive, safe environment for tech enthusiasts! For the extra privacy conscious, you can visit Facebook in a privacy-focused browser (such as Safari or Firefox) rather than installing the Facebook app. Browsers have much less access to your device than apps, and a privacy-focused browser will strictly limit the kind of information Facebook can hoover up from your device.

Facebook also offers tips to keep your account secure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will I be able to answer my Apple hardware and software question in the new Facebook group?

A: Yes, you'll still be able to ask these questions. With the Facebook group, you can also use the page Search feature to see if someone else has already had the same problem, so you can find an immediate answer.

Q: Who will answer my questions?

A: The Ask an Expert team will still answer your questions Monday through Thursday, as before. But, your question will also be crowdsourced, meaning fellow Insiders can chime in. Many hands make light work, after all, and another Insider who's experienced the same problem as you may have an immediate answer!

Q: What else will I find in the new Facebook group?

A: Lots! We'll remind you about upcoming courses and live sessions. We'll post about new guides, tips, gear, apps, podcasts, and magazine issues. Members of the iPhone Life team will take turns featuring their work and offering their expertise to the group. This will come in particularly handy when our live classes are running. Each teacher will take a turn in the group to answer questions related to the course.
