How to Use iOS 18 Satellite Messaging
System Requirements
This tip was performed on an iPhone 16 running iOS 18.3.1. You will need an iPhone 14 or later to use satellite messaging on your iPhone. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.
Before you can use iOS satellite messaging, make sure you have iMessage turned on, and make sure your SIM is active. If you want others to be able to contact you via SMS using satellite, add them to your emergency contacts or Family Sharing Group. Otherwise, they'll have to get a message from you via satellite before they can reply. Apple states that messaging via satellite is free for two years after the activation of your iPhone 14 or later model.
Now, let's get started sending messages via satellite!
Note
If you're in an emergency and need to contact emergency services, use Emergency SOS.
- Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
- Tap Use Messages via Satellite.
- Move to an outdoor location with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, trees, and other obstructions may stop your iPhone from connecting to a satellite.
- You'll see a green dot and a satellite icon at the top of your screen when your iPhone connects to a satellite.
- If the satellite connection weakens, the green dot will turn orange, and right and left arrows will appear to show you where to move to improve signal strength.
- Enter your message as usual, then tap the Send icon (it will be green while sending via SMS).
- Be patient; it can take a few minutes to send your message.
