Preparing for Your HomePod & HomePod mini Setup

Before you read on to how to set up your HomePod mini or HomePod, double-check the following requirements:

  • Make sure that the iPhone or iPad you are using to set up your HomePod has the latest iOS or iPadOS update installed.
  • Enable Bluetooth on the device you will be using for HomePod setup.
  • Make sure iCloud Keychain is enabled
  • Make sure that Two-Factor Authentication is enabled.
  • Check that you have the Home and Apple Music apps installed on your iOS device. Both apps are installed by default, but if you've deleted either one, you can reinstall them via the App Store.
  • Plug your HomePod into a reliable power source. You may need to use an adapter.
  • Only the owner of a set-up Home can add a new HomePod.

Warning:

You must have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to set up a HomePod or HomePod mini. You cannot set up any HomePod with a Mac.

How to Set Up HomePod mini or HomePod

Setting up HomePod minis or HomePods is easy, and the steps are the same, so it doesn't matter which one or which model you have. I will be using my iPhone to set up my HomePod mini, but the steps should be similar on your iPad or iPod touch. Here's how to connect HomePod to iPhone:

  1. To set up your HomePod, bring your iPhone near the plugged-in HomePod. It should automatically show up on your phone. Tap Set Up. If it doesn't show up, skip down to the next section.

  2. Follow the on-screen directions to pair your HomePod to your iPhone.

  3. Select the Home you wish to add the new HomePod to. If you have multiple Homes, you can swipe up and down to navigate between them. Tap Continue.

  4. Select the Room your HomePod will be in. If you have multiple Rooms, you can swipe up and down to navigate between them. Tap Continue.

  5. You will get the option to use your iCloud account to transfer settings to your HomePod. Tap Transfer Settings. If you are doing this for the first time, you may see different on-screen directions.

  6. If you have multiple HomePods, you may be offered the option of using two HomePods together to use as a Stereo Pair. You can always do this later, I'll tap Not Now.

  7. It may take some time for your HomePod to finish setting up. Once it says HomePod Is Ready, tap Done.

What to Do if Your HomePod Isn't Showing Up on Your iPhone

Whether you're getting an error message or nothing is happening, finding that you can't connect to your HomePod is frustrating. Before you call Apple Support, try these troubleshooting tips.

If your HomePod is paired with another iOS device, you'll need to reset your HomePod. To reset the HomePod without the device it's paired to:

  • Unplug and plug the HomePod back in while simultaneously pressing down on the top of the HomePod.
  • After a few seconds, you'll see a red blinking light. Continue pressing down. After a few seconds, you'll hear Siri instructing you to continue pressing down. Soon, you'll hear three chimes, at which point you can release your finger and continue with the steps in the previous section.

Finally, if none of these methods are working, you can input the code manually in the Home app. The code will be in the packaging that came with your HomePod. To enter the eight-digit code that can be found in your HomePod packaging:

  1. Open the Home app.
