Share a Wi-Fi Password Between Your Mac & iPhone

  • Bluetooth must be enabled on both your Mac and iPhone. 
  • Your Apple devices much be placed close to one another (within Bluetooth range) in order to share Wi-Fi passwords.

If you have a Wi-Fi password saved on one of your Apple devices, you can easily share the password to your other devices. This way, you can avoid manually typing the Wi-Fi password on each device. If you often connect your various Apple devices to new networks, this simple trick can make your setup much more convenient! Here's how to share Wi-Fi passwords between your iPhone and Mac.

Make Sure Bluetooth is Active on Both Devices

Before we start with the steps to share the Wi-Fi password, we first need to check that Bluetooth is enabled on both your Mac and iPhone. If you already know you have Bluetooth enabled, go ahead and skip to the sections below to share the password between your Apple devices. 

  1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap Bluetooth

    Tap Bluetooth.
  2. If the toggle isn't already switched on, tap the Bluetooth toggle to enable it. 

    The toggle is green when enabled.
  3. On your Mac, click the Control Center icon in the top right corner. If Bluetooth wasn't already enabled, click the Bluetooth icon to switch it on.

    The Bluetooth icon will be gray if it was turned off.

Once you've confirmed Bluetooth is enabled on both Apple devices, you're ready to automatically share the Wi-Fi password from one device to another.

    How to Share a Wi-Fi Password from Mac to iPhone

    Place your Mac and iPhone close to each other (anywhere within 30 feet is fine, as long as both devices are within Bluetooth range of each other). Then, follow the steps below to share the Wi-Fi password from your Mac to your iPhone: 

    1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Personal Hotspot (you won't actually need to turn on a hotspot).

      On the iPhone, in Settings, tap on Personal Hotspot (you don’t have to actually turn on a hotspot)
    2. Now on your Mac, click the Apple icon in the top left corner and select System Settings

      Click on System Settings…
    3. Click Bluetooth from the left side of the menu.

      Click Bluetooth.
    4. From your list of devices, find the iPhone you want to share the Wi-Fi password with, and click Connect.

      Find the iPhone you want to share with, and click Connect.

    How to Share a Wi-Fi Password from iPhone to Mac

    Begin by placing your Mac and iPhone close to each other. Then, follow the steps to share the Wi-Fi password from your iPhone to your Mac: 

    1. On your Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner of your screen and select the network you want to join. 

    2. On your iPhone, a prompt will automatically appear asking if you'd like to share the Wi-Fi password. Tap Share Password and your Mac will connect to the Wi-Fi network. 

    Now you know how to easily share Wi-Fi passwords between your Mac and iPhone! Also, if you're interested in avoiding battery drain and potentially connecting to unsafe networks, you can also automatically turn off Wi-Fi on your iPhone when you leave home.
