Recently, I wrote about the difficulty in using a 16 GB iPhone and how Apple should really consider making a larger capacity model be the entry-level configuration. Perhaps I would have been okay with 16 GB if I had iMyFone Umate iPhone Cleaner ($19.95).
The program is for Mac or PC, and sold directly from the iMyFone website, not the Apple Mac App Store. I prefer buying from the Mac App Store, because there are no registration codes to keep track of and I can run easily such apps on multiple devices. Plus apps on the App Store have gone through at least a minimal set of security checks by Apple. In order to install a third-party app, you have to explictly give such permission to your Mac. However, it is understandable that Umate is not sold through the Mac App Store, because it does so much inside the iPhone that Apple might not approve.
Specifically, there are a ton of options, including the ability to selectively delete apps and photos, or just losslessly compress photos, which is a nice touch. Many of these features should have been part of iOS or iTunes, or both.
I liked the app's clean, modern design and that it is available on both Mac and PC.
Pros
- Clean, modern app design
- Mac or PC
- Powerful options to delete unwanted apps and photos, and compress others
- Breathes new life into older iOS devices
- Affordable, especially while on sale
Cons
- Not sold on Mac App Store
Final Verdict
iMyFone Umate iPhone Cleaners has the potential to breathe new life into older iOS devices and make it easier to make do with less memory.
