This year at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference, Craig Federighi announced a couple of new changes to the Photos app that many of us were excited to see—myself included! The following are two of the main changes you can look forward to seeing in the near future.
Advanced Computer Vision
Apple is finally bringing face recognition to its Photos app. Although this sort of technology legitimately weirds a few people out, I’m pretty excited about it. This is something I’ve been longing to do in the Photos app for a while. I take so many pictures, and oftentimes I’ve wished that I could tag specific people or add searchable keywords to my photos that way I could sort through them easier. It doesn’t sound like we will have the ability to add keywords, however, according to Federighi, photos featuring friends and family will automatically be built into their own respective albums, which will make reviewing photos with specific people much simpler. And that same technology will also allow the iPhone to sort images based off the subjects in a scene, meaning it will be easier to access all of your photos taken in the mountains, at the beach, or even with your pet (enthusiastic dog and cat owners, rejoice!).
“Memories” Tab
With the popularity of Timehop and Facebook’s On This Day, it comes as no surprise that Apple would find its own way to tune into our nostalgic sensibilities. In iOS 10, the Photos app will now offer a new “Memories” tab located on the bottom of the screen that will use advanced artificial intelligence to organize your memories by location, the people involved, and the subjects in a scene. Doing this not only gives you the ability to view memories centered around specific trips or people, but it lets you view memories organized by topic—for instance, you can view a collection of photos taken on the water. You can also view videos showcasing your events, which are automatically strung together and set to the music of your choice.
