How secure is your small business? Are any of your passwords "Password?" Are you at risk of malware being accidentally installed in the office? Unfortunately, these are all real risks that any business can face, regardless of the size of your company. Fortunately, there are best practices that you can follow to keep your small business secure.
Take Advantage of Native Features
Apple has excellent native security. With features like passcode enforcement, software updates, and Find My help organizations protect their company devices, or locate them in the event they are missing. An MDM solution builds on those features to give you even more security. For instance, if a device is lost or stolen, you can lock and wipe the device to ensure your data remains protected.
Only Download Well-Maintained Apps
Making sure all your devices are up to date is a critical part of keeping your devices secure. Apple’s software updates often include security improvements that keep products safe from malware and hacking. You'll also want to check on who is publishing the apps you download to make sure the app is safe to install. I download several apps per month to test for reviews. Before installing an app, I always check the date of when it was last updated. If the app was updated three years ago, I don't bother installing it and move on to apps published more recently or that have been maintained over time.
Encrypt Your Data
Of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If a device ever goes missing, what happens to the secure data stored on that device? If you have a Mac, you can encrypt your data using a function called FileVault, located in System Preferences under Security and Privacy.
