Review: The Beautyrest Sleep Tracker Provides Complex, Accurate Reports

I must admit, I was skeptical when Beautyrest wanted to send me its Sleeptracker ($199). It seems like every hardware maker is trying to sell a sleep tracking device but they are all wearable. Beautyrest has a different approach, perhaps because it is a mattress manufacturer or maybe it knows a little more about sleep than the average tech company. Beautyrest's offering is a sensor that is placed under your mattress, aligned with your pillow. It includes two sensors, so a pair of sleepers can be tracked separately. The sensor comes with 3M adhesive tape that can be used to secure the sensors in place. That makes it less portable, but I was able to just let the weight of my king size mattress keep the sensors in place without the tape.

Once the sensors are in place, you use the free companion app to track your sleep. There is a bit of a setup process where you specify your ideal sleep and wake times, age, weight, etc., and then you are good to go. The app and service will email daily reports that are quite sophisticated. You can see charts showing not only sleep duration but also deep sleep, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep time, and more. I was surprised at how accurate and detailed the reports were, with just a little sensor about a foot below my head. But sure enough, it noticed when I woke up, in the middle of the night, and in the morning, and more. After repeated use, it noticed trends and offered advice. I now look forward to a good night's sleep and seeing my report in the morning! Beautyrest has managed to gamify sleeping. And it's not dependent on wearing a watch or fitness tracker all night. You can't easily take the Sleeptracker with you when traveling, but that shouldn't be a big deal for most users.

Pros

  • Simple setup
  • Robust reporting
  • Incredible accuracy
  • Supports one or two sleepers
  • Alexa integration

Cons

  • Not quite portable
  • Free with select Sealy purchases

Final Verdict

The Sleeptracker from Beautyrest isn't cheap, but it is impressive and can be found at significant discounts or even free with the purchase of certain mattresses.
