iPhone XR Case Review: Leather Cases from Nomad Combine Style & Protection

I recently upgraded to the iPhone XR and that meant searching for a new case. The folks at Nomad sent several to review and I had a hard time choosing. I ended up with the simple and elegant Rugged Case (starting at $44.95) but some users might prefer Nomad's folio options for a few dollars more. What I like about all of the cases is, despite having a leather surface, they have a protective silicone shell that completely encompasses the perimeter of the iPhone. The coverage includes the port area at the bottom, which is where some competing cases, particularly Apple's own cases, skimp on coverage.

I feel like my Nomad case is as protective as most cases in its class, while still feeling like a fine leather wallet. Nomad's folio cases do indeed double as wallets with a number of slots for credit cards, while still folding flat. Like any genuine leather product, they will absorb oils and develop a patina over time. Nomad even shows a "100-day" version of most of its cases. It just adds to the charm. My only wish is that, in addition to the dark brown and black options, that the company carried over its Blue Horween Leather option from earlier cases.

Despite the silicone shell and the leather exterior, I've never had a problem wirelessly charging my iPhone while it's in the Nomad case. Some of Nomad's cases have a special adaptor to accommodate camera lenses from Moment, sold separately. This is a surprising and welcome touch for a stylish case. You can take equally stylish photos now, too!

Pros

  • Beautiful to look at and luxurious to the touch
  • Brown or black
  • Folio options
  • Reasonably priced
  • Compatible with Moment M-series Lenses

Cons

  • Missing Blue Horween Leather option
  • Be sure to order the "for Moment" model if you want the camera lens capability

Final Verdict

The Rugged Case from Nomad has rugged good looks that are enhanced with age and offer full protection for your iPhone along with a portfolio option and external camera lens compatibility.
