You don’t need 3D Touch to take a gif-like video, and it seems Instagram saw an open market after Apple's Live Photos release: meet the app Boomerang (free) for capturing short loop videos. Boomerang shoots a burst of 10 images and strings them together to create a mini video. From there, you can share the burst to your phone, Facebook, or Instagram.
Already, reviews for the app are fantastic and often comparing Apple’s Live Photos to the Boomerang app. Instagram is clearly competing with Live Photos for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, providing the feature free to those who haven't upgraded their phone as well. As a Live Photo newbie and Boomerang tester, the app seems like a perfect alternative to Live Photos if you’re itching to try the feature but not looking to upgrade your phone.
According to Instagram’s blog, Boomerang is best if you want to “capture a friend jumping off a diving board, defying physics as she flies back and forth through the air. Transform an ordinary selfie with your friends into a funny video. Get that exact moment your friend blows out his birthday candles, then watch them come back to life again and again.” Watch the preview below.
