How to Restrict In-App Purchases

Many apps provide extra content or enhancements for a fee, but in-app purchases are a good way to accidentally rack up a high App Store bill. Those 99 cent extras add up quickly and before you know it, you (or your kids!) have gone way over your monthly phone bill budget. No worries though; there’s an easy way to prevent this in your Settings app. Here’s how to restrict in-app purchases.

To turn off purchases that can be made within an app, open Settings. Select General. Tap Restrictions.

Enable Restrictions if they aren’t already turned on. Enabling restrictions for the first time will prompt you to create a passcode. Write this passcode down and store it in a safe place. Bad things happen to people who forget their restrictions passcode! (But if you do forget it, this tip will tell you what to do.)

Once you've enabled restrictions, scroll down to In-App Purchases. Toggle In-App Purchases off to disable them. You can always go back later and turn them back on if you change your mind.

From here, you can also set restrictions for content such as movie ratings or explicit music. As well as turn off the the ability to install apps or delete them.
